Acne Medication

Acne skin treatments through the years have evolved from X-Rays to Topical treatments like Benzoyl Peroxide, Tretinoin, Clindamycin, Tetracycline, Isotretinoin, Azelaic acid, and oral antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Minocycline, Isotretinoin, oral (Accutane), Adapalene and Sodium Sulfacetamide.

Mild to moderate acne may require acne removal treatment of bactericidal products containing Benzoyl peroxide, which are widely available over-the-counter.

The cream or gel containing benzoyl peroxide is rubbed, twice daily, into the pores over the affected region and primarily prevents new lesions by killing P.acnes.

However, it is known to routinely cause dryness, local irritation and redness. A sensible acne skin care treatment regimen may include the daily use of low-concentration (2.5%) benzoyl peroxide preparations, combined with suitable non-comedogenic moisturisers to help avoid overdrying the skin.

Externally applied acne popular treatment antibiotics such as clindamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline or stiemycin aim to kill the bacteria that are blocking the follicles. While topical skin care products are equally as effective as oral, topical treatment avoid possible side effects of stomach upset or drug interactions, but may prove awkward and messy when applied over larger areas than just the face alone.

Oral antibiotics used to treat acne include erythromycin or one of the tetracycline antibiotics (the better absorbed oxytetracycline, tetracycline or one of the once daily doxycycline, lymecycline or minocycline).

Alternatively, trimethoprim is also sometimes prescribed.

Additionally the antibiotics are becoming less and less effective as resistant P. acnes are becoming more common.

Acne will generally reappear quite soon after the end of treatment (days later in the case of topical applications, and weeks later in the case of oral antibiotics.

Retinoids are related to vitamin A and can be applied externally (topical) or taken orally.  Topical retinoids include tretinoin (brand name Retin-A), adapalene (brand name Differin) and tazarotene (brand name Tazorac).

Oral retinoids works by reducing the secretion of oils from the glands. These are being promoted as Vitamin A derivatives like isotretinoin (marketed as Accutane, Sotret).  The treatment is best maintained for period of 4-6 months.
