Common Skin Diseases, Disorders, Problems

Most moles are benign and should not be of any problem.  But some can turn cancerous especially if a mole exhibits changes and if there are new moles cropping up in all likely areas of the body.

Actinic Lentigines, more commonly called liver spots or age spots are grayish brown spots on the areas of the body that have been exposed to most sun such as the wrists, the back of hands, lower arms and faces.

Seborrheic keratoses, called barnacles tend to look like they were pasted on.

The condition is not in anyway caused by the sun and is not cancerous.

It can develop anywhere but tend not to emerge below the waist.  The condition can be removed if it can get bothersome and irritated. Dermatofibromas are also called subepidermal nodular fibrosis, sclerosing hemangioma or histiocytomas. They tend to be round, starting out red and fading to brown eventually and are usually found on the legs.

Persons in their middle age are common ‘bearers’ of this skin problem. Keratosis Pilaris shows up as small pimples mostly on the upper arms and the thighs but also can appear on the back, face and buttocks.  It is caused by the plugging of the hair follicles by skin cells as they die and flake off.

Melasma, also called chloasma is a benign skin characterized by a darker appearance compared to the surrounding skin and most often appears on the face and other portions of the body exposed to the sun.  The problem is aoslo attributed to hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy, hormonal treatments during menopause or any other type of hormonal drugs.

Pityriasis Rosea starts out as a small pink patch on the back or the chest. It is commonly mistaken for ringworm but it is not caused by a fungus.  The patches can linger from six to eight weeks.

Lichen Planus shows up as flat topped bumps that are reddish-purple on areas like the wrist, ankles and the mouth.

Rashes describe just about any skin condition including all of the previously mentioned.

But a rash in its true condition refers to ‘allergic contact rashes’ or contact dermatitis and sometimes the term eczema.

The condition is a localized reaction that includes redness, itching, and burning where the skin has come into contact with an allergen

Rosacea, often referred to as adult acne, causes redness and swelling in the face.  The earliest stage, called Prerosacea involves episodes of flushing in the face and the neck. Vascular rosacea appears when the small blood vessels under the skin of the face swell and results in a constant redness. Inflammatory rosacea are little pink bumps and pimples.  Rhinophyma occurs most on the nose as thick bumps.

Vitiligo, which is the result of the loss of skin pigmentation, results to white patchy spots on the affected part anywhere in the body.

The ingrown hairs of the beard are called razor bump.

Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral skin disease often transmitted sexually.  The condition can result in lesions on the genitals, lower abdomen, buttocks, or inner thighs.

Molluscum contagiosum results in flesh colored bumps on the skin that can become inflamed, red and painful. On occasions, the lesions may be excessively itchy or become irritated.
