Contraceptive Pills

Women using oral contraceptives generally get more improvement in acne than do women using a placebo (sugar pill).

Different oral contraceptives may vary in their ability as acne removal treatment, as degree of acne severity can also affect improvement.

Birth-control pills, an oral acne skin treatment containing a combination of progestin and estrogen are often prescribed as an acne alternative treatment for hormonal acne.

Most birth control pills do contain a combination of progestin and estrogen hormones in various combinations.

What actually work best in,clearing acne are birth control pills that contain hormones with lower, androgen activity, as opposed to birth control pills that contain estrogen and progestin hormones with higher androgen (male hormone) which tend to make acne worse.

By reducing the effect of the androgen hormones on the sebaceous glands, contraceptive pills can reduce the amount of oil the glands produce, which means that the pores are less likely to get blocked.

Also, there are studies saying that low-dose acne popular treatment contraceptives improve acne regardless of which formula is used.  Small amounts of estrogen are known to help suppress the androgens produced by the ovaries.   Meanwhile, the newer progestin agents, including desogestrel and norgestimate are less androgenic than those found in older formulations.

Doctors also may prescribe an anti-androgen drug in combination with other oral contraceptives. Drugs with anti-androgenic properties inhibit androgen production in the ovaries and adrenal glands and help prevent existing androgens from causing excessive oil production.

Small doses of corticosteroids, like dexamethasone or prednisone may reduce inflammation and suppress the androgens produced by the adrenal glands.

Keep in mind that in some acne sufferers, corticosteroids may actually aggravate acne; they’re most effective when used in combination with oral contraceptives.

It is good to note that side effects are rare.  Some women may experience melasma (hyperpigmentation) or brownish blotches on the skin. These skin complaints can be treated with topical bleaching agents.  Other reported cases include breast tenderness, headache and fatigue.

Small doses of corticosteroids, like best acne doctor medicines dexamethasone or prednisone are most effective when used in combination with oral contraceptives.  The combination of medication may curb inflammation and suppress the androgens produced by the adrenal glands.  However, in some acne sufferers, corticosteroids may actually aggravate acne.
