Acne Cyst Treatment

Pimples and zits are local infections caused by clogged pores that swelled with sebum. It can easily spread when it ruptures, turns to blemishes and can inflame to form nodulocystic acne or commonly called acne cysts.

Acne cyst is a severe form of acne affecting the face, chest and back, is more common in males.

The common symptoms of acne cyst are pus pockets, open and closed comedones, and raised red areas of the skin.

It is generally characterized by multiple inflamed and uninflamed nodules and frequently, scars.

A most uncommon and unpleasant form of acne cyst is called acne conglobata.  It is an interconnecting sinuses and abscesses, which result in unsightly hypertrophic (thick) and atrophic (thin) scars and boil-like lesions.

The latter may appear as groups of large “macrocomedones” and cysts that are filled with smelly pus.

For cases of acne cyst, topical treatment is usually ineffective. The recommended acne cyst treatment is isotretinoin - a retinoid, derived from vitamin-A (retinoic acid).  To prevent scarring, the treatment should be administered early and would last for 4 to 5 months, and further courses are sometimes necessary.

Isotretinoin is particularly effective acne removal treatment because it significantly reduces sebum production and shrinks the sebaceous glands because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

It also gets rid of comedones and prevents new ones forming.  The skin dries up, inhibiting the growth of acne bacteria.

When isotretinoin is unavailable or unsuitable, systemic antibiotics (taken by mouth or given by injection) for acne cyst are in the form of capsules and elixirs may also be effective. Antibiotics aside from anti-inflammatory action, also reduce the number of bacteria on the skin surface and in the follicles

Acne conglobata cases would need additional best acne doctor medicines such as oral antibiotics and intralesional or oral steroids. Systemic Steroids are synthetic derivatives of the natural steroid, cortisol, which is produced by the adrenal glands.  It works as an acne skin treatment in the same way as natural cortisol, and is prescribed for a large number of serious skin diseases including severe forms of acne cyst.

There are several acne cyst treatments and options available today including cosmetic surgery specifically laser acne treatments.
