Blackhead Removal Treatment
Although it
is not clearly understood, the hyper-activity of
the sebaceous glands is largely to blame for the
occurrence and recurrence of blackheads.
This unsightly
skin condition develops in the pores when the active
oil producing sebaceous glands are clogged with oil.
The clogged oil -- called
sebum -- begins to harden in the pore and develops
into small “plugs”. It turns black when
the top part of the hardened sebum oxidizes.
The
hardening of the oil forces the black top of the
oil plug to protrude to the surface of the skin causing
the blackhead to be visible.

Consequently, the blockage by the blackhead
results to infection of the oil gland and starts the
formation of acne. That is why, preventing and
removing blackheads helps to control acne.
Blackhead
removal treatment starts in keeping the skin as clean and
oil free as possible. Dermatologists advised to avoid
harsh soaps or any creams that can leave an oily finish
and may irritate the skin. A
gentle exfoliant helps to keep the dead cells off the skin and away from the
pore openings.

When signs
of blackheads start to appear, a warm water compress
applied to the area of the blackhead followed by
a very, very gentle pressure can help in clearing
the clog from the pore.
Harsh squeezing or scraping
at the blackhead can damage the skin surrounding
the pore and can actually increase the size of the
pore to cause more blackheads in the future.
Like acne
removal treatments, there are various commercial
blackhead removal treatments available today such
as natural or chemically prepared cleansers, astringent
solutions, face masks, blackhead extractors or “blackhead
strips.” |
The latter remove some blackheads that are at
the surface. Shops offering acne skin treatments and acne
alternative treatments may also carry products specifically
for the treatment of blackheads.
What actually work a little “deeper” in to the skin are mild scrubs and exfoliaters containing alpha hydroxy fruit acids. The treatment can clear away any dead skin cells and “expose” the blackhead. Also, the oxygen in a low potency (read: no overuse) benzoyl peroxide helps to breakup and clear the blackhead.
