Effects of the Sun

Tanning is a fad among women – and yes some men too – who shun the pasty white complexions they were born with or they suffered long enough through the winter.

But a beautiful tan is not beautiful at all.  Seemingly attractive, yes, but according to scientific research, such a thing as a “healthy natural tan” does not exist.

The golden glow is, in essence, not a beauty skin care appeal but rather the skin's reaction to damage already done.

In fact, further studies reveal that more than 90% of sun damage skin presents darker color changes before wrinkles or fine lines appear.

Two types of UV (or Ultraviolet) rays, UVA and UVB are the most hazardous component of a natural suntan. Both can deeply penetrate the skin and potentially damage gene makeup.

The predominant type is the UVA rays, the one that tend to cause skin cancer after prolonged periods of time. On the other hand, sunburn and the sting associated with sun exposure result from UVB rays, which, when tolerated, can also be a strong risk factor for skin cancer.

  • Pigmentation changes which signal the first signs of sun damage.  It would appear in the form of freckles, liver spots, brown spots, uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation (over active).

  • Permanent white spots or no color or pigmentation (hypopigmentation).
  • Permanent dilation of small blood vessels causing spider veins, giving the skin a constant red flush; also called – if you care to read - Telangiectasia (tee-lang-jeck-tah-zee-ah).

  • “Tough skin” -- and rough to the touch, which is actually epidermal thickening.
  • Senile comedones blackheads
  • Actinic keratoses or sun callous are scaly lesions often pre-cancerous.
  • Basal and squamous cell carcinoma and the most prevalent form of skin cancer, melanoma.
  • Cataracts develop as the lens in the eyes thickens as a protective response to the sun.

Aside from wrinkles or the premature or accelerated aging called photoaging, there are other care skin complaints attributable to repeated sun exposure, namely:

One can never totally do away with the sun.  With this knowledge, you can actually choose the best cosmetic skin care available to counter the harmful effects of the sun.

Subsequently, if the damage is already experienced, a proper medication skin care can be requested.

Still and all, who wants to miss the fun under the sun? The beach beckons -- shades, towels and sandals in tote.

If you’re desperate for that bronzed tan, don’t forget your organic skin care lotions or skin care creams.  And yes make sure it has sunscreen component.
